Narrative:
Clearance parke J6 lit byp. Byp 2 dfw arthur kill 2 departure, vector 000. I departed runway 22R ewr. Turned left 190 degrees to 2.3 DME, then right 260 degrees expecting radar vectors. I did not see the note to intercept the 100 degree radial to sbj. I just completely overlooked it when I saw the expect radar vectors I stopped there. ATC asked if we were intercepting 100 degree radial from sbj. I started looking for it thinking they would vector us to parke via bwz 250 degree radial which is J6. While searching for sbj 100 degree radial, approach said to turn right immediately to 320 degrees. I thought he said 220 degrees and turned left instead. In my haste and misconception, I turned the wrong way. He then said again to turn right to 320 degrees and I did immediately. We did not receive an RA or TA but ATC was very concerned. My first officer also read the departure as expect vectors after the 260 degree heading. In the future I will read all the notes on the departure and not go with my first impression. We were rushed at departure and I did not look it over thoroughly enough. I had a preconceived notion all along where he would take us and it interfered with my understanding of the real clearance.

Title: FLC OF B727 MISINTERPS THE ARTHUR KILL 2 DEP AND WAIT FOR RADAR VECTORS INSTEAD OF TURNING TO INTERCEPT A RADIAL.
Narrative: CLRNC PARKE J6 LIT BYP. BYP 2 DFW ARTHUR KILL 2 DEP, VECTOR 000. I DEPARTED RWY 22R EWR. TURNED L 190 DEGS TO 2.3 DME, THEN R 260 DEGS EXPECTING RADAR VECTORS. I DID NOT SEE THE NOTE TO INTERCEPT THE 100 DEG RADIAL TO SBJ. I JUST COMPLETELY OVERLOOKED IT WHEN I SAW THE EXPECT RADAR VECTORS I STOPPED THERE. ATC ASKED IF WE WERE INTERCEPTING 100 DEG RADIAL FROM SBJ. I STARTED LOOKING FOR IT THINKING THEY WOULD VECTOR US TO PARKE VIA BWZ 250 DEG RADIAL WHICH IS J6. WHILE SEARCHING FOR SBJ 100 DEG RADIAL, APCH SAID TO TURN R IMMEDIATELY TO 320 DEGS. I THOUGHT HE SAID 220 DEGS AND TURNED L INSTEAD. IN MY HASTE AND MISCONCEPTION, I TURNED THE WRONG WAY. HE THEN SAID AGAIN TO TURN R TO 320 DEGS AND I DID IMMEDIATELY. WE DID NOT RECEIVE AN RA OR TA BUT ATC WAS VERY CONCERNED. MY FO ALSO READ THE DEP AS EXPECT VECTORS AFTER THE 260 DEG HDG. IN THE FUTURE I WILL READ ALL THE NOTES ON THE DEP AND NOT GO WITH MY FIRST IMPRESSION. WE WERE RUSHED AT DEP AND I DID NOT LOOK IT OVER THOROUGHLY ENOUGH. I HAD A PRECONCEIVED NOTION ALL ALONG WHERE HE WOULD TAKE US AND IT INTERFERED WITH MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE REAL CLRNC.
