Narrative:
During autoplt descent to cross wever at 10000 ft and 250 KTS, altitude hold failed to work. Switch was engaged with about a 500 FPM descent. Stabilizer trim light came on. Autoplt was disengaged and correction to altitude was made. During correction received a TA. Total loss of altitude was 200 ft.

Title: B727 ON STAR AND CLRED 10000 FT AND 250 KTS, FLT CREW RELYING ON AUTOPLT TO CAPTURE SET ALT. IT DIDN'T CAPTURE SO ACFT WENT 200 FT LOW. RPTR CAPT DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND RETURNED TO ASSIGNED.
