Narrative:
Approximately 15 mins prior to landing at iad, the captain called (2 chimes) and said we had 1 engine shut down and to put everything away (secure galley and prepare for landing). I asked if the flight attendants should do any emergency preparation. He said no. Secure in our jumpseats approximately 5 mins prior to landing, the captain again called (2 chimes) and asked if everything was secure. We said yes. He said it should be a normal landing. The airplane landed smoothly without incident. Emergency ground vehicles met the aircraft and escorted us into the gate. The captain gave a PA explaining to the passenger that the emergency vehicles were procedure for the aircraft engine shutdown. Passenger were calm. Normal deplaning.
