Narrative:

While doing our before starting engine checklist (item remaining: turn on seat belt sign). The agent brought in a 'jump seat rider' and I allowed the checklist procedure to be interrupted (forgot to turn on seat belt sign). Engine start and power back were normal. During taxi I noticed the seat belt switch was in the 'off' position -- I immediately turned on the switch and the flight continued normally. I now realize the importance of always maintaining normal procedures at all times.
