Narrative:
Engine failure due to apparent stall. Engine shutdown accomplished using published procedures and diversion accomplished to iad. Although aircraft was on climb out from jfk at FL350, iad was closer, with less traffic, was VFR, and very familiar to captain.

Title: CAPT OF A B757 SHUT DOWN AN ENG INFLT, NEAR TOP OF CLBOUT, DUE TO AN ENG COMPRESSOR STALL. A DIVERSION TO LAND TO AN ARPT LESS CONGESTED, WITH GOOD WX, AND FAMILIAR TO HIM, THAN THE ONE HE JUST DEPARTED.
