Narrative:
Myself and another private pilot, on a local VFR practice flight, departed F54 without a planned local destination. After about 10 mins into the flight, we decided to land at 50F airport. We tuned CTAF frequency for 50F and consulted airport facility directory for all available information. After overflying 50F and announcing position and intentions, we set up for visual runway 35 and landed. After taxiing to ramp, an airport attendant advised us that runway 17/35 was closed. Another person who appeared to be the airport owner also advised us that runway 17/35 was closed. However, there were no yellow closure markings placed on runways. We were advised that runway 17/35 was ok for taxiing to the grass strip runway 32 for departure. At that time we returned to arlington base airport F54. In retrospect, we should have had a destination airport preplanned before takeoff and checked all NOTAMS for that airport. Also, if visual yellow closure markings had been placed on runway 17/35, this occurrence could have been prevented.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PVT PLT OF A PIPER PA28-140 LANDED ON A CLOSED RWY AND DID NOT KNOW IT WAS CLOSED UNTIL ADVISED BY THE ARPT MGR SINCE THERE APPEARED TO BE NO X'S ON THE RWY AT EITHER END.
Narrative: MYSELF AND ANOTHER PVT PLT, ON A LCL VFR PRACTICE FLT, DEPARTED F54 WITHOUT A PLANNED LCL DEST. AFTER ABOUT 10 MINS INTO THE FLT, WE DECIDED TO LAND AT 50F ARPT. WE TUNED CTAF FREQ FOR 50F AND CONSULTED ARPT FACILITY DIRECTORY FOR ALL AVAILABLE INFO. AFTER OVERFLYING 50F AND ANNOUNCING POS AND INTENTIONS, WE SET UP FOR VISUAL RWY 35 AND LANDED. AFTER TAXIING TO RAMP, AN ARPT ATTENDANT ADVISED US THAT RWY 17/35 WAS CLOSED. ANOTHER PERSON WHO APPEARED TO BE THE ARPT OWNER ALSO ADVISED US THAT RWY 17/35 WAS CLOSED. HOWEVER, THERE WERE NO YELLOW CLOSURE MARKINGS PLACED ON RWYS. WE WERE ADVISED THAT RWY 17/35 WAS OK FOR TAXIING TO THE GRASS STRIP RWY 32 FOR DEP. AT THAT TIME WE RETURNED TO ARLINGTON BASE ARPT F54. IN RETROSPECT, WE SHOULD HAVE HAD A DEST ARPT PREPLANNED BEFORE TKOF AND CHKED ALL NOTAMS FOR THAT ARPT. ALSO, IF VISUAL YELLOW CLOSURE MARKINGS HAD BEEN PLACED ON RWY 17/35, THIS OCCURRENCE COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED.
