Narrative:
Cleared by tower to taxi from holding short of runway 12L to runway 12R. When crossing runway 17, I could see an aircraft on final for what appeared to be runway 17. Another aircraft behind us was cleared to taxi also to runway 12R. (In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have been so concerned with the aircraft that was following us, but having only been to hobby one other time, the distance between those runways didn't appear to me to be sufficient to allow both of us to hold short.) thinking that the aircraft on final was going to runway 17, I went over the hold short line in order to provide space for the aircraft following us to be clear of runway 17. As it turned out, the landing aircraft was landing on runway 12R. No call was received from tower, and the aircraft landed without incident. My perceptions: as I am sure it has been well documented, the northwest corner of hobby airport is very tight and easily confusing. Tower could have helped by saying that traffic was landing on runway 12R.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR B737 CROSSED RWY 12R HOLD LINE TO ALLOW ROOM FOR ANOTHER ACFT BEHIND THEM BTWN THE PARALLEL RWYS AS RPTR THOUGHT LNDG TFC WAS FOR ANOTHER RWY; ACFT LANDED RWY 12R.
Narrative: CLRED BY TWR TO TAXI FROM HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 12L TO RWY 12R. WHEN CROSSING RWY 17, I COULD SEE AN ACFT ON FINAL FOR WHAT APPEARED TO BE RWY 17. ANOTHER ACFT BEHIND US WAS CLRED TO TAXI ALSO TO RWY 12R. (IN RETROSPECT, I PROBABLY SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN SO CONCERNED WITH THE ACFT THAT WAS FOLLOWING US, BUT HAVING ONLY BEEN TO HOBBY ONE OTHER TIME, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THOSE RWYS DIDN'T APPEAR TO ME TO BE SUFFICIENT TO ALLOW BOTH OF US TO HOLD SHORT.) THINKING THAT THE ACFT ON FINAL WAS GOING TO RWY 17, I WENT OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE IN ORDER TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR THE ACFT FOLLOWING US TO BE CLR OF RWY 17. AS IT TURNED OUT, THE LANDING ACFT WAS LANDING ON RWY 12R. NO CALL WAS RECEIVED FROM TWR, AND THE ACFT LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT. MY PERCEPTIONS: AS I AM SURE IT HAS BEEN WELL DOCUMENTED, THE NW CORNER OF HOBBY ARPT IS VERY TIGHT AND EASILY CONFUSING. TWR COULD HAVE HELPED BY SAYING THAT TFC WAS LANDING ON RWY 12R.
