Narrative:
Just after takeoff from runway 13R at aus, the tower controller advised us to turn right to heading 230 degrees, maintain 4000 ft. During the initial start of the turn, the controller advised us that he had VFR traffic, a C172, at our 3 O'clock position, climbing to 3500 ft MSL. During our turn the controller asked us to tighten up our turn. At this point we still had not fully retracted our flaps, but complied with his request. As we rolled out on the 230 degree heading, I (PNF) spotted the VFR traffic directly in front of us and at our same altitude (approximately 3200 ft MSL). I requested a higher altitude from tower with no response. At this point I estimated the traffic was approximately 1/2 mi in front of us. We received and complied with the RA and advised ATC we were climbing to avoid traffic. At this time the controller gave us a climb clearance to 11000 ft MSL, and advised us to contact departure control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 ACFT DEPARTING UNDER POSITIVE CTL OF ATCT LCL CTLR AND ON VECTOR HAD TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION TO MISS A C172 WHO WAS IN CONTACT WITH THE TWR. THE CTLR HAD NOTIFIED THE B737 FLC ABOUT THE TFC, BUT THE VECTOR BROUGHT THEM TOO CLOSE.
Narrative: JUST AFTER TKOF FROM RWY 13R AT AUS, THE TWR CTLR ADVISED US TO TURN R TO HDG 230 DEGS, MAINTAIN 4000 FT. DURING THE INITIAL START OF THE TURN, THE CTLR ADVISED US THAT HE HAD VFR TFC, A C172, AT OUR 3 O'CLOCK POS, CLBING TO 3500 FT MSL. DURING OUR TURN THE CTLR ASKED US TO TIGHTEN UP OUR TURN. AT THIS POINT WE STILL HAD NOT FULLY RETRACTED OUR FLAPS, BUT COMPLIED WITH HIS REQUEST. AS WE ROLLED OUT ON THE 230 DEG HDG, I (PNF) SPOTTED THE VFR TFC DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF US AND AT OUR SAME ALT (APPROX 3200 FT MSL). I REQUESTED A HIGHER ALT FROM TWR WITH NO RESPONSE. AT THIS POINT I ESTIMATED THE TFC WAS APPROX 1/2 MI IN FRONT OF US. WE RECEIVED AND COMPLIED WITH THE RA AND ADVISED ATC WE WERE CLBING TO AVOID TFC. AT THIS TIME THE CTLR GAVE US A CLB CLRNC TO 11000 FT MSL, AND ADVISED US TO CONTACT DEP CTL.
