Narrative:

After departing from phx, I was instructed to overfly a local landmark and then proceed on course (radar service was terminated at that point). My en route course took me to the south of dvt and its class D airspace. While climbing through 3800 ft MSL, a company aircraft remarked that I appeared to be in the class D airspace. I increased my rate of climb through 4000 ft MSL (the top of the class D airspace) and noted my distance from the airport. I estimated my distance to be at least 4.5 NM, but just to be sure I called dvt tower and asked if there had been a problem with my distance and altitude. The controller said that he hadn't even noticed me, and thanked me for the call.
