Narrative:
I had just departed from jyo en route to winchester, va. I had leveled off at 1200 ft MSL to remain below class B airspace (1500 ft MSL floor in this area). I was monitoring unicom, looking for inbound traffic (2) that had reported their location. I sighted the traffic and altered my course 20-30 degrees to the right to remain clear. At this time, I checked my altitude and saw that I was rapidly approaching 1500 ft MSL. I immediately pushed over, but the altimeter momentarily peaked at 1520 ft MSL. I was very close to the edge of the class B ring, and the bottom of the next ring is 2500 ft MSL. I am not sure if I was actually under the 1500 ft ring when the altitude peaked at 1520 ft. I had set the altitude to field elevation, so I am also not sure of accuracy compared to the iad altimeter setting. I did not immediately look at DME as I continued to watch for traffic. Next time I will check altitude after initial trimming (more often).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF A PA28-235 HAD LEVELED OFF BELOW THE FLOOR OF CLASS B AIRSPACE BUT DURING TFC CHK FOR INBOUND TFC HE CLBED ABOVE THE 1500 FT FLOOR.
Narrative: I HAD JUST DEPARTED FROM JYO ENRTE TO WINCHESTER, VA. I HAD LEVELED OFF AT 1200 FT MSL TO REMAIN BELOW CLASS B AIRSPACE (1500 FT MSL FLOOR IN THIS AREA). I WAS MONITORING UNICOM, LOOKING FOR INBOUND TFC (2) THAT HAD RPTED THEIR LOCATION. I SIGHTED THE TFC AND ALTERED MY COURSE 20-30 DEGS TO THE R TO REMAIN CLR. AT THIS TIME, I CHKED MY ALT AND SAW THAT I WAS RAPIDLY APCHING 1500 FT MSL. I IMMEDIATELY PUSHED OVER, BUT THE ALTIMETER MOMENTARILY PEAKED AT 1520 FT MSL. I WAS VERY CLOSE TO THE EDGE OF THE CLASS B RING, AND THE BOTTOM OF THE NEXT RING IS 2500 FT MSL. I AM NOT SURE IF I WAS ACTUALLY UNDER THE 1500 FT RING WHEN THE ALT PEAKED AT 1520 FT. I HAD SET THE ALT TO FIELD ELEVATION, SO I AM ALSO NOT SURE OF ACCURACY COMPARED TO THE IAD ALTIMETER SETTING. I DID NOT IMMEDIATELY LOOK AT DME AS I CONTINUED TO WATCH FOR TFC. NEXT TIME I WILL CHK ALT AFTER INITIAL TRIMMING (MORE OFTEN).
