Narrative:
Departed islip runway 24. Cleared to 9000 ft. First officer hand-flying, in right turn, climbing turn through 8500 ft given TA off jfk at 11 O'clock position, climbing in our direction. Distracted by the IL62 heavy. We climbed through the assigned altitude. As the altitude alert chimed ATC cleared us to climb to 11000 ft. No mention of an altitude deviation was made. Supplemental information from acn 403590: the event reinforced to me not to just clear the called traffic but to also fly the airplane and comply with clrncs.
