Narrative:
While avoiding heavy rain and thunderstorms encountered turbulence causing 300-400 ft altitude variation. Also, ATC possibly showed 200' or more off altitude when altimeter showed on altitude. Transponder was just out of radio shop. Currently getting it checked.

Title: PLT OF SMA HAS ALTDEV DUE TO TURB AND POSSIBLE MALFUNCTIONING XPONDER.
Narrative: WHILE AVOIDING HVY RAIN AND TSTMS ENCOUNTERED TURB CAUSING 300-400 FT ALT VARIATION. ALSO, ATC POSSIBLY SHOWED 200' OR MORE OFF ALT WHEN ALTIMETER SHOWED ON ALT. XPONDER WAS JUST OUT OF RADIO SHOP. CURRENTLY GETTING IT CHKED.
