Narrative:
After landing at ric runway 16 the captain assumed control of the steering as the aircraft decelerated through approximately 50 KTS. The tower had cleared us to execute a 180 degree turn on the runway and back taxi to an intersecting runway (runway 20) to clear. When the aircraft was at taxi speed the captain moved the aircraft to the r-hand side of the runway to make a 180 degree turn to the left. Just as we started the left turn the aircraft shuddered and assumed a slightly r-wing down attitude. The aircraft was immediately brought to rest and tower contacted. Upon investigation it was found that the right main gear had crossed the white runway edge line and immediately broken through the pavement to about 12 inches. The engines were shut down and maintenance contacted. Although I realize we are supposed to remain within the markings I was very surprised how quickly and easily the pavement gave way.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727-200 WHILE TAXIING AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN PER THE TWR INSTRUCTIONS THE R MAIN GEAR EXITED THE TXWY AND THE ACFT BECAME STRANDED.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG AT RIC RWY 16 THE CAPT ASSUMED CTL OF THE STEERING AS THE ACFT DECELERATED THROUGH APPROX 50 KTS. THE TWR HAD CLRED US TO EXECUTE A 180 DEG TURN ON THE RWY AND BACK TAXI TO AN INTERSECTING RWY (RWY 20) TO CLR. WHEN THE ACFT WAS AT TAXI SPD THE CAPT MOVED THE ACFT TO THE R-HAND SIDE OF THE RWY TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN TO THE L. JUST AS WE STARTED THE L TURN THE ACFT SHUDDERED AND ASSUMED A SLIGHTLY R-WING DOWN ATTITUDE. THE ACFT WAS IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT TO REST AND TWR CONTACTED. UPON INVESTIGATION IT WAS FOUND THAT THE R MAIN GEAR HAD CROSSED THE WHITE RWY EDGE LINE AND IMMEDIATELY BROKEN THROUGH THE PAVEMENT TO ABOUT 12 INCHES. THE ENGS WERE SHUT DOWN AND MAINT CONTACTED. ALTHOUGH I REALIZE WE ARE SUPPOSED TO REMAIN WITHIN THE MARKINGS I WAS VERY SURPRISED HOW QUICKLY AND EASILY THE PAVEMENT GAVE WAY.
