Narrative:
Cleared for IFR descent from 13000 ft to 12000 ft. Traffic was pointed out at 9 O'clock, approximately 7 mi. Traffic was reported in sight. I believe that we were also cleared to 11000 ft. ZBW told us to stop our descent at 12000 ft. We told center we were at 11500 ft and immediately climbed to 12000 ft. I believe there was confusion about the actual clearance altitude and as to whether we were cleared to 12000 ft or 11000 ft. The traffic pointed out by center was very distant at 11000 ft and not really a conflict. Normal expectation on that route and destination is for a descent clearance to 11000 ft at that location.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF AN ACR MDT TURBOPROP OVERSHOT ASSIGNED ALT DURING DSCNT RESULTING IN ATC INTERVENTION AND THEIR IMMEDIATE RETURN TO ASSIGNED. THE FLC BELIEVED THAT THEY WERE CLRED TO A LOWER ALT EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE GIVEN AN AIR TFC ADVISORY OF AN ACFT AT THAT ALT.
Narrative: CLRED FOR IFR DSCNT FROM 13000 FT TO 12000 FT. TFC WAS POINTED OUT AT 9 O'CLOCK, APPROX 7 MI. TFC WAS RPTED IN SIGHT. I BELIEVE THAT WE WERE ALSO CLRED TO 11000 FT. ZBW TOLD US TO STOP OUR DSCNT AT 12000 FT. WE TOLD CTR WE WERE AT 11500 FT AND IMMEDIATELY CLBED TO 12000 FT. I BELIEVE THERE WAS CONFUSION ABOUT THE ACTUAL CLRNC ALT AND AS TO WHETHER WE WERE CLRED TO 12000 FT OR 11000 FT. THE TFC POINTED OUT BY CTR WAS VERY DISTANT AT 11000 FT AND NOT REALLY A CONFLICT. NORMAL EXPECTATION ON THAT RTE AND DEST IS FOR A DSCNT CLRNC TO 11000 FT AT THAT LOCATION.
