Narrative:
Departed runway 25R per mead 1 SID. Started right turn at 3 DME to heading 070 degrees. When switched to departure controller, he asked if tower had assigned 'runway heading.' captain replied, 'no flying SID.' after a closer review of the pre departure clearance, 'ATC clearance' read: mead 1 pgs J86 elp J183 cll/cugar 6. However the statement 'disregard idp fly runway heading' was noted in the lower portion of the pre departure clearance. This brings up questions regarding the ATC clearance portion of the pre departure clearance. Corrective actions: 1) ATC clearance should have read: 'fly runway heading, expect radar vectors pgs/J86 elp J183 cll/cugar 6' (not some hidden 'catch ya' somewhere in the pre departure clearance). 2) loss of communication in IFR conditions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80 ACFT ON SID DEP MADE TURN IN ACCORDANCE WITH SID PROC, BUT THE PDC HAD A NOTE TO FLY RWY HDG. FLC MISSED SEEING THE NOTE OR MISUNDERSTOOD IT.
Narrative: DEPARTED RWY 25R PER MEAD 1 SID. STARTED R TURN AT 3 DME TO HDG 070 DEGS. WHEN SWITCHED TO DEP CTLR, HE ASKED IF TWR HAD ASSIGNED 'RWY HDG.' CAPT REPLIED, 'NO FLYING SID.' AFTER A CLOSER REVIEW OF THE PDC, 'ATC CLRNC' READ: MEAD 1 PGS J86 ELP J183 CLL/CUGAR 6. HOWEVER THE STATEMENT 'DISREGARD IDP FLY RWY HDG' WAS NOTED IN THE LOWER PORTION OF THE PDC. THIS BRINGS UP QUESTIONS REGARDING THE ATC CLRNC PORTION OF THE PDC. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: 1) ATC CLRNC SHOULD HAVE READ: 'FLY RWY HDG, EXPECT RADAR VECTORS PGS/J86 ELP J183 CLL/CUGAR 6' (NOT SOME HIDDEN 'CATCH YA' SOMEWHERE IN THE PDC). 2) LOSS OF COM IN IFR CONDITIONS.
