Narrative:
Approximately 150 NM from bna a passenger notified the 'B' flight attendant that clear fluid was coming from top of wing behind #2 engine pylon. Flight attendant notified me. Suspecting a fuel leak even though fuel gauges did not indicate a loss I notified bna operations and asked for contract maintenance to meet us. Arrival at gate was met by maintenance. I instructed them to inspect pylon for fuel leak. Maintenance control had requested me to call them. I called them, talked to operations, talked again to maintenance (they did not want to take off inspection panel -- I insisted), briefed relieving crew. FAA maintenance inspector arrived, I briefed him (all this within 10 mins of block in). Checked to make sure mechanics were removing inspection panel and was heading to cockpit to complete write-up in logbook. FAA maintenance inspector asked if it was in book. I said no but that is where I was headed. He complained that I should not have called maintenance until write-up was in logbook. That is not our procedure. A leak was found. Aircraft was grounded and removed from service. All log entries were completed normally.

FAA MAINT INSPECTOR ASKED IF IT WAS IN BOOK. I SAID NO BUT THAT IS WHERE I WAS HEADED. HE COMPLAINED THAT I SHOULD NOT HAVE CALLED MAINT UNTIL WRITE-UP WAS IN LOGBOOK. THAT IS NOT OUR PROC. A LEAK WAS FOUND. ACFT WAS GNDED AND REMOVED FROM SVC. ALL LOG ENTRIES WERE COMPLETED NORMALLY.
