Narrative:

Air carrier flight XXX departed indianapolis airport. Routine climb out. Our filed flight plan showed FL260 as a final. Center ATC controller cleared us to what we thought and read back was FL230. At FL225 the first officer asked ATC for clearance to continue climb to FL260. ATC controller indicated that FL220 would be our final altitude. We immediately descended back to FL220. Nothing more was said between cockpit crew and controller. In retrospect we would prefer to clarify misunderstanding or communication. We assumed we were wrong in climbing to FL230.
