Narrative:
Jun/xa/98 XA30. Longmont, co. Taxied into position for takeoff runway 11 after a C185 had just landed on same runway. I stopped in position slightly offset from centerline to gain good visibility of runway. I saw that cessna was turning left at the midfield turnoff exit. I then centered the stearman biplane on runway centerline and applied full power. As I gained speed and brought the tail up, I immediately saw that the cessna was back on the runway and proceeding to the end turnoff. By this time, I realized that I had achieved flying speed, and with over 1000 ft of clearance from cessna, I rotated to climb speed and banked over to the right to gain additional clearance. I do not think that this was a near miss event. However, I am sure that this condition was created by the ground aircraft marshallers not barricading the midfield runway exit and relying only on occasional hand signals to indicate that the midfield runway turnoff was closed for exiting aircraft.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A STEARMAN ACFT LINED UP AND WAITED FOR A CESSNA TO CLR THE RWY. WHEN THE CESSNA STARTED A TURN OFF THE RWY, THE STEARMAN PLT APPLIED FULL PWR FOR TKOF. AS HIS TAIL CAME UP, HE SAW THE CESSNA BACK ON THE RWY TAXIING TO THE END. THE STEARMAN WAS ABLE TO TURN AND CLB SAFELY AROUND THE CESSNA.
Narrative: JUN/XA/98 XA30. LONGMONT, CO. TAXIED INTO POS FOR TKOF RWY 11 AFTER A C185 HAD JUST LANDED ON SAME RWY. I STOPPED IN POS SLIGHTLY OFFSET FROM CTRLINE TO GAIN GOOD VISIBILITY OF RWY. I SAW THAT CESSNA WAS TURNING L AT THE MIDFIELD TURNOFF EXIT. I THEN CTRED THE STEARMAN BIPLANE ON RWY CTRLINE AND APPLIED FULL PWR. AS I GAINED SPD AND BROUGHT THE TAIL UP, I IMMEDIATELY SAW THAT THE CESSNA WAS BACK ON THE RWY AND PROCEEDING TO THE END TURNOFF. BY THIS TIME, I REALIZED THAT I HAD ACHIEVED FLYING SPD, AND WITH OVER 1000 FT OF CLRNC FROM CESSNA, I ROTATED TO CLB SPD AND BANKED OVER TO THE R TO GAIN ADDITIONAL CLRNC. I DO NOT THINK THAT THIS WAS A NEAR MISS EVENT. HOWEVER, I AM SURE THAT THIS CONDITION WAS CREATED BY THE GND ACFT MARSHALLERS NOT BARRICADING THE MIDFIELD RWY EXIT AND RELYING ONLY ON OCCASIONAL HAND SIGNALS TO INDICATE THAT THE MIDFIELD RWY TURNOFF WAS CLOSED FOR EXITING ACFT.
