Narrative:
When I arrived at the aircraft for the preflight, I reached for the aircraft logbook when my first officer told me he had already put our flight number in and the book was clean. I had checked via computer downstairs and saw we had one maintenance carry over on board and I asked him if that was the only one and he said yes. When we arrived at our destination I opened the logbook to put in our fuel remaining, and I noticed an open discrepancy concerning the use of one of our medical kits which had been called in to maintenance 4 hours earlier, but had not been signed off. I called maintenance and they replaced the medical kit. According to our MEL both medical kits are required with certain minimum contents. The medical kit should have been replaced earlier when the aircraft first passed through slc. I do not know why it wasn't since that crew had called in the discrepancy while en route to slc. The crew which brought the aircraft to us in ida should have ensured the kit was replaced, but they didn't nor did they tell us about it. My first officer had no satisfactory answer to why he didn't tell me about the write-up, nor did the flight attendants tell me about the kit when they performed their emergency equipment check.

Title: A B737-300 WAS DISPATCHED AND CONTINUED IN SVC WITH AN OPEN LOG ITEM ON THE FIRST AID KIT USED AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT.
Narrative: WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE ACFT FOR THE PREFLT, I REACHED FOR THE ACFT LOGBOOK WHEN MY FO TOLD ME HE HAD ALREADY PUT OUR FLT NUMBER IN AND THE BOOK WAS CLEAN. I HAD CHKED VIA COMPUTER DOWNSTAIRS AND SAW WE HAD ONE MAINT CARRY OVER ON BOARD AND I ASKED HIM IF THAT WAS THE ONLY ONE AND HE SAID YES. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT OUR DEST I OPENED THE LOGBOOK TO PUT IN OUR FUEL REMAINING, AND I NOTICED AN OPEN DISCREPANCY CONCERNING THE USE OF ONE OF OUR MEDICAL KITS WHICH HAD BEEN CALLED IN TO MAINT 4 HRS EARLIER, BUT HAD NOT BEEN SIGNED OFF. I CALLED MAINT AND THEY REPLACED THE MEDICAL KIT. ACCORDING TO OUR MEL BOTH MEDICAL KITS ARE REQUIRED WITH CERTAIN MINIMUM CONTENTS. THE MEDICAL KIT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED EARLIER WHEN THE ACFT FIRST PASSED THROUGH SLC. I DO NOT KNOW WHY IT WASN'T SINCE THAT CREW HAD CALLED IN THE DISCREPANCY WHILE ENRTE TO SLC. THE CREW WHICH BROUGHT THE ACFT TO US IN IDA SHOULD HAVE ENSURED THE KIT WAS REPLACED, BUT THEY DIDN'T NOR DID THEY TELL US ABOUT IT. MY FO HAD NO SATISFACTORY ANSWER TO WHY HE DIDN'T TELL ME ABOUT THE WRITE-UP, NOR DID THE FLT ATTENDANTS TELL ME ABOUT THE KIT WHEN THEY PERFORMED THEIR EMER EQUIP CHK.
