Narrative:
Approximately 55 mi south of nuley we were assigned to complete our climb to FL350 in 45 mi because of traffic at FL330 that would be crossing nuley near our ETA. Due to our failure to properly anticipate our climb performance, we were approximately 500 ft short of FL350 at 10 DME from nuley. At approximately 20 DME from nuley I reported FL340 for FL350 to ATC. We saw our traffic on TCASII, we came no closer than 8-10 mi and 1500 ft vertically. No conflict reported by ATC.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CLBING B727 CANNOT COMPLY WITH ATC REQUEST TO REACH FL350 BY A CERTAIN POINT, THEREBY ALMOST CONFLICTING WITH OPPOSITE DIRECTION TFC AT FL330. ESTIMATED VERT SEPARATION AT ACFT'S PASSING EACH OTHER WAS 1750 FT VERSUS THE REQUIRED 2000 FT.
Narrative: APPROX 55 MI S OF NULEY WE WERE ASSIGNED TO COMPLETE OUR CLB TO FL350 IN 45 MI BECAUSE OF TFC AT FL330 THAT WOULD BE XING NULEY NEAR OUR ETA. DUE TO OUR FAILURE TO PROPERLY ANTICIPATE OUR CLB PERFORMANCE, WE WERE APPROX 500 FT SHORT OF FL350 AT 10 DME FROM NULEY. AT APPROX 20 DME FROM NULEY I RPTED FL340 FOR FL350 TO ATC. WE SAW OUR TFC ON TCASII, WE CAME NO CLOSER THAN 8-10 MI AND 1500 FT VERTLY. NO CONFLICT RPTED BY ATC.
