Narrative:
Departure planned from runway 36 at washington national. Aircraft gross weight for takeoff at 102982 pounds. Tps takeoff data indicates maximum takeoff weight of 104200 pounds allowance. ATIS WX: winds variable at 4 KTS, 6 mi visibility in haze, 28/19, altimeter 29.86, runway 36. Takeoff appeared normal. Rotation begun 2000-1500 ft from end of runway. Flight attendant reported a possible 'scraping' sound on rotation. Remainder of flight normal. Postflt inspection revealed the tail bumper in normal position. Supplemental information from acn 407772: we began rotation at vr with approximately 2000-1500 ft remaining. It became clear that a normal rotation would not be sufficient to become airborne. I increased the rotation rate as to be airborne prior to the end of the runway. We were less than 35 ft above the end of runway 36.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN ACR MLG HAS A PROBABLE TAIL STRIKE ON TKOF FROM DCA. THE CABIN ATTENDANT RPTED A SCRAPING SOUND TO THE CREW, WHO FOUND NO ACFT DAMAGE ON THEIR POSTFLT INSPECTION.
Narrative: DEP PLANNED FROM RWY 36 AT WASHINGTON NATL. ACFT GROSS WT FOR TKOF AT 102982 LBS. TPS TKOF DATA INDICATES MAX TKOF WT OF 104200 LBS ALLOWANCE. ATIS WX: WINDS VARIABLE AT 4 KTS, 6 MI VISIBILITY IN HAZE, 28/19, ALTIMETER 29.86, RWY 36. TKOF APPEARED NORMAL. ROTATION BEGUN 2000-1500 FT FROM END OF RWY. FLT ATTENDANT RPTED A POSSIBLE 'SCRAPING' SOUND ON ROTATION. REMAINDER OF FLT NORMAL. POSTFLT INSPECTION REVEALED THE TAIL BUMPER IN NORMAL POS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 407772: WE BEGAN ROTATION AT VR WITH APPROX 2000-1500 FT REMAINING. IT BECAME CLR THAT A NORMAL ROTATION WOULD NOT BE SUFFICIENT TO BECOME AIRBORNE. I INCREASED THE ROTATION RATE AS TO BE AIRBORNE PRIOR TO THE END OF THE RWY. WE WERE LESS THAN 35 FT ABOVE THE END OF RWY 36.
