Narrative:
We were on a scheduled flight to cak. Halfway across lake michigan the captain noticed the aircraft logbook missing from the aircraft library. It turned out that while the captain and I were preparing for gate departure, maintenance personnel had come out to the aircraft and removed the logbook without our realizing it. I was involved with getting clearance and preparing the manifest. We reported the situation to dispatch and were told to return to ord to retrieve it. We did so and then continued to cak. Air carrier is adjusting our procedures for logbook removal so this won't happen again.
