Narrative:
We were parked at gate at bwi and received taxi clearance, 'taxi to runway 28 via txwys a and C.' on taxiway a near P1 I accidentally transitioned over to taxiway P. I had my taxi chart out but chose to follow the signs (that were misleading). The taxiway a sign (black background) is on the left side of taxiway P leading one to keep it to his left to stay on the designated taxiway, but this puts you on taxiway P (which becomes clear after the fact). The proper place for the black taxiway a sign is on the left but this is not feasible due to taxiway a blending in with the ramp so, it is logical that it is placed on the right side of taxiway a, but this needs to be accompanied by a directional arrow to clarify to crews that the sign is in a non standard place.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A TAXIING BA4100 TAXIES VIA THE WRONG TXWY WHEN THE PIC GETS CONFUSED OVER A TXWY SIGN PLACEMENT.
Narrative: WE WERE PARKED AT GATE AT BWI AND RECEIVED TAXI CLRNC, 'TAXI TO RWY 28 VIA TXWYS A AND C.' ON TXWY A NEAR P1 I ACCIDENTALLY TRANSITIONED OVER TO TXWY P. I HAD MY TAXI CHART OUT BUT CHOSE TO FOLLOW THE SIGNS (THAT WERE MISLEADING). THE TXWY A SIGN (BLACK BACKGROUND) IS ON THE L SIDE OF TXWY P LEADING ONE TO KEEP IT TO HIS L TO STAY ON THE DESIGNATED TXWY, BUT THIS PUTS YOU ON TXWY P (WHICH BECOMES CLR AFTER THE FACT). THE PROPER PLACE FOR THE BLACK TXWY A SIGN IS ON THE L BUT THIS IS NOT FEASIBLE DUE TO TXWY A BLENDING IN WITH THE RAMP SO, IT IS LOGICAL THAT IT IS PLACED ON THE R SIDE OF TXWY A, BUT THIS NEEDS TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY A DIRECTIONAL ARROW TO CLARIFY TO CREWS THAT THE SIGN IS IN A NON STANDARD PLACE.
