Narrative:
On descent/approach to atl, ATC asked 'what is your airspeed?' replied '250 KIAS assigned.' atl advised 'I gave you 180 KTS, somebody read it back.' had about 2 mi separation on aircraft ahead, same altitude. Multiple company aircraft on frequency with call signs ending in the same 2 digits as ours. Supplemental information from acn 409575: our last known airspeed assigned by approach was 250 KTS. About the time I was going to ask the captain to ask what speed he (the controller) wanted (because of TCASII I could see we were really starting to close on the aircraft in front of us) our controller became busy with air carrier flight going the wrong way. Before we could ask, he became irritated with us for not flying 180 KTS assigned and told us to turn 30 degrees left. We came within 800 ft and 2 mi of the aircraft preceding us (according to TCASII). We may have missed his assigned airspeed when he gave us an altitude and heading change earlier. Very busy frequency, similar call signs. I need to stay very alert at all times.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: APCH CTLR ASSIGNED AN ACR MD88 A SPD OF 180 KTS, WHICH WAS ACKNOWLEDGED BY SOME ACFT, BUT NOT THE MD88. WHEN THE CTLR SAW AN OVERTAKE OCCURRING HE QUESTIONED THE MD88 AND TURNED HIM FOR SEPARATION. LTSS OCCURRED.
Narrative: ON DSCNT/APCH TO ATL, ATC ASKED 'WHAT IS YOUR AIRSPD?' REPLIED '250 KIAS ASSIGNED.' ATL ADVISED 'I GAVE YOU 180 KTS, SOMEBODY READ IT BACK.' HAD ABOUT 2 MI SEPARATION ON ACFT AHEAD, SAME ALT. MULTIPLE COMPANY ACFT ON FREQ WITH CALL SIGNS ENDING IN THE SAME 2 DIGITS AS OURS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 409575: OUR LAST KNOWN AIRSPD ASSIGNED BY APCH WAS 250 KTS. ABOUT THE TIME I WAS GOING TO ASK THE CAPT TO ASK WHAT SPD HE (THE CTLR) WANTED (BECAUSE OF TCASII I COULD SEE WE WERE REALLY STARTING TO CLOSE ON THE ACFT IN FRONT OF US) OUR CTLR BECAME BUSY WITH ACR FLT GOING THE WRONG WAY. BEFORE WE COULD ASK, HE BECAME IRRITATED WITH US FOR NOT FLYING 180 KTS ASSIGNED AND TOLD US TO TURN 30 DEGS L. WE CAME WITHIN 800 FT AND 2 MI OF THE ACFT PRECEDING US (ACCORDING TO TCASII). WE MAY HAVE MISSED HIS ASSIGNED AIRSPD WHEN HE GAVE US AN ALT AND HEADING CHANGE EARLIER. VERY BUSY FREQ, SIMILAR CALL SIGNS. I NEED TO STAY VERY ALERT AT ALL TIMES.
