Narrative:
We were level at 9000 ft MSL, and had just been cleared direct to lga by new york approach control (frequency 127.3). Our location was approximately 30 NM southwest of lga VOR. The controller advised that there was VFR traffic in our 12 O'clock position, a twin cessna VFR at 8500 ft MSL. We responded that we would look for him, and acquired a target on the TCASII. As the target approached, we were IMC in clouds, and the TCASII gave an RA of 'climb.' we climbed to 9250 ft MSL before the TCASII announced 'clear of conflict.' as we passed the target on the TCASII at 9250 ft MSL, the screen showed that it was 400 ft below our altitude. I notified the controller of our actions in response to the TCASII while in IMC conditions. Time was XX07Z, location approximately the lga 233 degree radial/28 DME. I don't see how this traffic could possibly be VFR.

Title: A B727-200 FLC FLYING IN N-90 AIRSPACE HAS AN NMAC AS A TWIN CESSNA FLIES TOWARD THEM. THE FLC FOLLOWS INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE TCASII RA.
Narrative: WE WERE LEVEL AT 9000 FT MSL, AND HAD JUST BEEN CLRED DIRECT TO LGA BY NEW YORK APCH CTL (FREQ 127.3). OUR LOCATION WAS APPROX 30 NM SW OF LGA VOR. THE CTLR ADVISED THAT THERE WAS VFR TFC IN OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS, A TWIN CESSNA VFR AT 8500 FT MSL. WE RESPONDED THAT WE WOULD LOOK FOR HIM, AND ACQUIRED A TARGET ON THE TCASII. AS THE TARGET APCHED, WE WERE IMC IN CLOUDS, AND THE TCASII GAVE AN RA OF 'CLB.' WE CLBED TO 9250 FT MSL BEFORE THE TCASII ANNOUNCED 'CLR OF CONFLICT.' AS WE PASSED THE TARGET ON THE TCASII AT 9250 FT MSL, THE SCREEN SHOWED THAT IT WAS 400 FT BELOW OUR ALT. I NOTIFIED THE CTLR OF OUR ACTIONS IN RESPONSE TO THE TCASII WHILE IN IMC CONDITIONS. TIME WAS XX07Z, LOCATION APPROX THE LGA 233 DEG RADIAL/28 DME. I DON'T SEE HOW THIS TFC COULD POSSIBLY BE VFR.
