Narrative:
Cleared for takeoff. Cleared to 5000 ft. Given a tight left turn to avoid WX. First officer flying. I was working WX radar very briefly in turn. I heard the altitude alerter but it just didn't register. Very strange with 4000 hours in type. Just a few seconds late but aircraft was climbing through 5300 ft. We leveled at 5500 ft and went back down to 5000 ft. All 3 of us remembered hearing the altitude alerter and no one caught it. I was flying with this crew all month and we run a professional, sterile and standard cockpit. There should have been a callout from me 1000 ft prior to leveloff.
