Narrative:
New aircraft type just added to part 121 certificate. Aircraft DME was removed from aircraft and sent out for repair. Aircraft was scheduled for training flight. I was asked to defer the DME. At this time the MEL had not been approved for this aircraft. I was unaware of this fact. The last deferred maintenance item (dmi) I performed was approximately 12 months ago. I was not familiar with the proper procedure. I found the procedure in the company maintenance manual. There was no mention of the MEL on this page. I filled out the logbook, non routine form, and dmi form, and placarded the aircraft. I did not list an MEL number on the log sheet. With no approved MEL, the item cannot be dmi'ed. I should have sought out instruction on current company procedures on how to dmi a piece of equipment. The DME was reinstalled on the aircraft 2 days later, at which point the improper dmi was discovered. No revenue flts were made during this time.
