Narrative:

During the morning, I was flying VFR from det to appleton. I was monitoring fond du lac unicom, and while 30 mi out I heard an aircraft call for a runway, then roger landing runway 36. I never heard unicom. Starting at 20 mi out I tried to call them about landing for fuel and never got an answer. As I crossed over the runway above pattern altitude I noticed a couple of aircraft in the pattern, so I got in sequence. When turning final I heard over unicom that there was a temporary tower, with frequency. As I quickly tuned the radio, I chose to do a go around. As I did, I heard the tower call my color and type. I rocked my wings as instructed. They sequenced me into a normal landing. While I realize that this whole situation was my fault, I feel that when I was monitoring the ASOS that there should be a way to announce 'special NOTAMS in effect.'
