Narrative:
Upon reporting to aircraft for preflight, found APU running and supplying pneumatic air and electricity to all busses. Upon later receipt of logbook, observed APU placarded inoperative with write-up stating APU shutdown with engine start attempt. Used ground air for engine start -- balance normal. Since APU was in use at time of receipt, elected to run APU arriving iah for air conditioning on very hot day. APU normal except for load controller made additional demand for engine start.

Title: CAPT OF A DC10 FOUND THE APU RUNNING WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE ACFT FOR PREFLT AND SUBSEQUENTLY NOTED THAT THERE WAS AN ACFT LOGBOOK ENTRY REGARDING THE APU BEING INOP. HOWEVER, THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT ACCOMPANIED THE WRITE-UP HIGHLIGHTED THE APU PROB AS SHUTTING DOWN WHEN STARTING THE ACFT ENGS SO GND OP FOR THE CABIN ENVIRONMENTAL EQUIP MAY NOT APPLY.
Narrative: UPON RPTING TO ACFT FOR PREFLT, FOUND APU RUNNING AND SUPPLYING PNEUMATIC AIR AND ELECTRICITY TO ALL BUSSES. UPON LATER RECEIPT OF LOGBOOK, OBSERVED APU PLACARDED INOP WITH WRITE-UP STATING APU SHUTDOWN WITH ENG START ATTEMPT. USED GND AIR FOR ENG START -- BAL NORMAL.
