Narrative:
During descent leaving FL230 noticed left engine N1 drop to 20% (32% is normal during flight idle descent). Fuel flow very low, and engine would not respond to throttle movement. Low oil pressure light came on, low idle light came on, and then generator dropped off. Left engine had flamed out. Cavu conditions, all system normal in cockpit with all fuel pumps operating normally, ignition on continuous. Declared emergency with bay approach and asked for priority to sfo. Had first officer perform single engine checklist, and I had the flight attendants prepare for a non-evacuate/evacuation advisory landing. Bay approach gave us excellent handling, we were cleared for visual approach runway 28L at sfo. Uneventful single engine landing at sfo. Clearing runway had emergency crews check left engine for fire and damage, none found. Went to gate and deplaned passenger. Maintenance tried to start engine at gate and it hung at 38%. Subsequently heard (not verified) that mec (main engine control) was defective.
