Narrative:
Preceding aircraft (westwind) was landing runway 18. It rolled beyond active txwys to a point which 'back taxi' was necessary. He was told to back taxi on runway 18. He went to the end of runway and turned around so that he appeared to be off runway and 'waiting' to back taxi. I had been cleared to land prior to this. I saw what was happening and continued. The control tower called to tell me 'go around, right side.' I took this to mean, that since the aircraft was going to back taxi, I was to go around it on the right side after landing on the runway. This was explained to ATC subsequently. Contributing factors were the controller's nonchalant voice, with no sense of urgency, on the 'go around' command. It did not register to me that he meant abandon approach and in fact 'go around' in-flight. In my opinion, safety was not compromised due to the fact that the preceding aircraft was off the runway, at the end, at my time of landing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF LIGHT TWIN ENG ACFT FOLLOWING A WESTWIND AT SJT MISUNDERSTOOD CTLR INSTRUCTIONS TO GAR. WHEN THE WESTWIND LANDED IT WAS NECESSARY FOR THE PLT TO TURN AROUND AT THE END OF THE RWY AND BACK TAXI. THE CTLR INSTRUCTED THE TWIN ENG ACFT TO, 'GAR,' BUT ADDING TO THE INSTRUCTION, 'R SIDE.' THE PLT LANDED AND TAXIED AROUND THE R SIDE OF THE WESTWIND ON THE RWY.
Narrative: PRECEDING ACFT (WESTWIND) WAS LNDG RWY 18. IT ROLLED BEYOND ACTIVE TXWYS TO A POINT WHICH 'BACK TAXI' WAS NECESSARY. HE WAS TOLD TO BACK TAXI ON RWY 18. HE WENT TO THE END OF RWY AND TURNED AROUND SO THAT HE APPEARED TO BE OFF RWY AND 'WAITING' TO BACK TAXI. I HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND PRIOR TO THIS. I SAW WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND CONTINUED. THE CTL TWR CALLED TO TELL ME 'GAR, R SIDE.' I TOOK THIS TO MEAN, THAT SINCE THE ACFT WAS GOING TO BACK TAXI, I WAS TO GAR IT ON THE R SIDE AFTER LNDG ON THE RWY. THIS WAS EXPLAINED TO ATC SUBSEQUENTLY. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE THE CTLR'S NONCHALANT VOICE, WITH NO SENSE OF URGENCY, ON THE 'GAR' COMMAND. IT DID NOT REGISTER TO ME THAT HE MEANT ABANDON APCH AND IN FACT 'GAR' INFLT. IN MY OPINION, SAFETY WAS NOT COMPROMISED DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE PRECEDING ACFT WAS OFF THE RWY, AT THE END, AT MY TIME OF LNDG.
