Narrative:
Misunderstood request from our flight to tower. On approach to runway 13R at bogota, we noted cabin pressurization set at 6000 ft. With unlimited visibility and unaware that traffic was following us, we requested left 360 degree turn from tower to allow cabin to climb. Both pilots thought response from tower to be 'approved as requested.' while turning at 11000 ft we spotted and reported an aircraft on final approximately 7 mi to the west of our location. Tower gave this aircraft instructions in spanish and cleared us to resume the approach. During the 360 degree turn, the traffic was in sight at all times. Ground below was well lighted, and no terrain was noted on display. Contributing factors to this event were: poor radio reception, blocked xmissions, lack of traffic awareness due to other communications in spanish, and the misunderstood request from us to tower.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 CREW DID NOT HAVE THE CABIN ALT SET CORRECTLY. THEY REQUESTED A 360 DEG TURN TO ALLOW THE CABIN TO CLB.
Narrative: MISUNDERSTOOD REQUEST FROM OUR FLT TO TWR. ON APCH TO RWY 13R AT BOGOTA, WE NOTED CABIN PRESSURIZATION SET AT 6000 FT. WITH UNLIMITED VISIBILITY AND UNAWARE THAT TFC WAS FOLLOWING US, WE REQUESTED L 360 DEG TURN FROM TWR TO ALLOW CABIN TO CLB. BOTH PLTS THOUGHT RESPONSE FROM TWR TO BE 'APPROVED AS REQUESTED.' WHILE TURNING AT 11000 FT WE SPOTTED AND RPTED AN ACFT ON FINAL APPROX 7 MI TO THE W OF OUR LOCATION. TWR GAVE THIS ACFT INSTRUCTIONS IN SPANISH AND CLRED US TO RESUME THE APCH. DURING THE 360 DEG TURN, THE TFC WAS IN SIGHT AT ALL TIMES. GND BELOW WAS WELL LIGHTED, AND NO TERRAIN WAS NOTED ON DISPLAY. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS EVENT WERE: POOR RADIO RECEPTION, BLOCKED XMISSIONS, LACK OF TFC AWARENESS DUE TO OTHER COMS IN SPANISH, AND THE MISUNDERSTOOD REQUEST FROM US TO TWR.
