Narrative:
Departing phl given clearance 'cleared direct ood passing 5000 ft MSL.' first officer at controls with captain working radios. Captain was distraction by other navigation tasks when controller asked, 'air carrier X what are you doing?' captain replied, 'going direct ood.' aircraft was passing 4000 ft in a right turn going through heading 180 degrees. Controller instructed, 'turn to 150 degrees.' evidently, first officer did not hear full clearance and was turning direct ood prior to reaching 5000 ft. Captain did not notice turn. Supplemental information from acn 411098: I did not hear the controller request after passing 5000 ft proceed direct ood. Suggest SID to be designed for a runway 9R/9L departure to help controllers and pilots cut down workload and needed radio traffic.

Title: CREW ON B737 DEPARTING PHL WERE INSTRUCTED AFTER 5000 FT TO PROCEED DIRECT TO VOR. FO FLYING PROCEEDED DIRECT IMMEDIATELY AFTER TKOF.
Narrative: DEPARTING PHL GIVEN CLRNC 'CLRED DIRECT OOD PASSING 5000 FT MSL.' FO AT CTLS WITH CAPT WORKING RADIOS. CAPT WAS DISTR BY OTHER NAV TASKS WHEN CTLR ASKED, 'ACR X WHAT ARE YOU DOING?' CAPT REPLIED, 'GOING DIRECT OOD.' ACFT WAS PASSING 4000 FT IN A R TURN GOING THROUGH HDG 180 DEGS. CTLR INSTRUCTED, 'TURN TO 150 DEGS.' EVIDENTLY, FO DID NOT HEAR FULL CLRNC AND WAS TURNING DIRECT OOD PRIOR TO REACHING 5000 FT. CAPT DID NOT NOTICE TURN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 411098: I DID NOT HEAR THE CTLR REQUEST AFTER PASSING 5000 FT PROCEED DIRECT OOD. SUGGEST SID TO BE DESIGNED FOR A RWY 9R/9L DEP TO HELP CTLRS AND PLTS CUT DOWN WORKLOAD AND NEEDED RADIO TFC.
