Narrative:
While on a downwind vector for ILS runway 26 at iah, we were advised of traffic and located the traffic which was on a 7-8 NM right base. We were advised to follow the traffic and cleared for visual approach. As we turned base to final, the flight director was armed for the approach. Turning final, we lost the traffic in the haze and both crew members were looking out the window to find the traffic. The flight director did not capture the ILS and I corrected when we were 1 DOT left of course. We were also between frequencys, going from approach to tower, and when we contacted tower he immediately climbed us and turned us nwbound to rejoin the ILS. We had already corrected and joined by the time the tower turned us. We had TCASII and never received a TA or RA. In addition, approach control never advised us of traffic to the parallel runway. However, after landing, the tower read us the riot act and then gave us another number to call for a second tongue lashing. Moral of the story: don't accept the visual to follow traffic in reduced visibility. And don't have total faith in the equipment to do the flying for you.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLC OF CPR ACFT CE650 ACCEPTS VISUAL APCH BUT LOSES SIGHT OF TFC WHEN TURNING BASE TO FINAL. LOOKING FOR TFC THEY FAIL TO CAPTURE THE ILS.
Narrative: WHILE ON A DOWNWIND VECTOR FOR ILS RWY 26 AT IAH, WE WERE ADVISED OF TFC AND LOCATED THE TFC WHICH WAS ON A 7-8 NM R BASE. WE WERE ADVISED TO FOLLOW THE TFC AND CLRED FOR VISUAL APCH. AS WE TURNED BASE TO FINAL, THE FLT DIRECTOR WAS ARMED FOR THE APCH. TURNING FINAL, WE LOST THE TFC IN THE HAZE AND BOTH CREW MEMBERS WERE LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW TO FIND THE TFC. THE FLT DIRECTOR DID NOT CAPTURE THE ILS AND I CORRECTED WHEN WE WERE 1 DOT L OF COURSE. WE WERE ALSO BTWN FREQS, GOING FROM APCH TO TWR, AND WHEN WE CONTACTED TWR HE IMMEDIATELY CLBED US AND TURNED US NWBOUND TO REJOIN THE ILS. WE HAD ALREADY CORRECTED AND JOINED BY THE TIME THE TWR TURNED US. WE HAD TCASII AND NEVER RECEIVED A TA OR RA. IN ADDITION, APCH CTL NEVER ADVISED US OF TFC TO THE PARALLEL RWY. HOWEVER, AFTER LNDG, THE TWR READ US THE RIOT ACT AND THEN GAVE US ANOTHER NUMBER TO CALL FOR A SECOND TONGUE LASHING. MORAL OF THE STORY: DON'T ACCEPT THE VISUAL TO FOLLOW TFC IN REDUCED VISIBILITY. AND DON'T HAVE TOTAL FAITH IN THE EQUIP TO DO THE FLYING FOR YOU.
