Narrative:
On a VFR flight from dallas (ads) to santa flight engineer (saf), I climbed to 16500 ft MSL. As I approached wichita falls, tx, the cloud tops began to rise, so I continued to climb in order to remain VFR. I was using flight following and squawking the transponder code I was instructed to use. The clouds were broken cumulus but became solid about 20 mi west of wichita falls. The cloud tops gradually got higher and I continued to climb. I turned northerly to locate a hole in order to descend. At the time I believe I was in contact with ZFW. Before I could find a hole in the clouds, flight following or center contacted me and asked my altitude. I responded after which flight following notified me that I was above VFR altitudes. I thought I saw a hole so I responded that I was sorry and would descend immediately. What I thought was a hole was not, but I was able to descend below FL180 shortly thereafter.
