Narrative:

We were on an IFR flight plan to jac but requested a VFR on- course climb to pick up our IFR clearance in the air. Tower ok'ed this and gave us a transponder setting and cleared us for takeoff to the west. (On-course climb could require a right turn of about 50 degrees.) after takeoff, we turned right. The tower said we should have turned left. Next time I want to turn right out of traffic at a tower controled airport, I will specifically request a 'right turnout.'
