On approach to ewr, approach control cleared the flight to 4000 ft. As we approached 4000 ft, approach control said to stop descent and asked what was our assigned altitude. We said 4000 ft and continued the flight.

Narrative: ON APCH TO EWR, APCH CTL CLRED THE FLT TO 4000 FT. AS WE APCHED 4000 FT, APCH CTL SAID TO STOP DSCNT AND ASKED WHAT WAS OUR ASSIGNED ALT. WE SAID 4000 FT AND CONTINUED THE FLT.
