Narrative:
Aircraft #1 'cleared to land on runway 4L' and verified by pilot. Aircraft #2 'cleared to land #2 on runway 4L.' I, pilot of aircraft #1, looked for traffic and found nothing. The #2 aircraft should have been sequenced much farther back and I was entering downwind leg, so I concentrated on the landing phase. After flying base and 1/2 way down final, controller of hnl tower asked me 'aircraft #1, what runway are you lined up with?' I responded, 'runway 4L.' then the controller asked, 'aircraft #2, what runway are you lined up on?' aircraft #2 responded, 'runway 4L.' at that instant I knew that 2 aircraft had to be very close, so I looked all around and when I looked straight up, I saw the grumman directly above me, descending for the runway. He was only about 100 ft above me. When I saw this, I cleared to the right and broke right. At the same time, the tower controller said 'aircraft #1, sidestep right, cleared to land on runway 4R.' I landed on runway 4R uneventfully. I think that contributing to the situation was 3 things: 1) high wing aircraft under a low wing aircraft. 2) controller not having #2 aircraft identify traffic ahead. 3) controller's overexpectation that pilots can see and avoid even with aircraft visibility restrs.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C172 AND AN AA5 WERE APPARENTLY CLRED TO LAND ON THE SAME RWY, IN SEQUENCE. THE AA5 OVERTOOK THE C172 ON SHORT FINAL, DSNDING ON TOP. AS THE CTLR QUESTIONED WHICH ACFT WAS LINED UP FOR RWY 4L, THE C172 CFI INSTRUCTOR OBSERVED THE DSNDING AA5 AND TOOK EVASIVE ACTION. THE CTLR CLRED THE C172 TO LAND ON RWY 4R.
Narrative: ACFT #1 'CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 4L' AND VERIFIED BY PLT. ACFT #2 'CLRED TO LAND #2 ON RWY 4L.' I, PLT OF ACFT #1, LOOKED FOR TFC AND FOUND NOTHING. THE #2 ACFT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SEQUENCED MUCH FARTHER BACK AND I WAS ENTERING DOWNWIND LEG, SO I CONCENTRATED ON THE LNDG PHASE. AFTER FLYING BASE AND 1/2 WAY DOWN FINAL, CTLR OF HNL TWR ASKED ME 'ACFT #1, WHAT RWY ARE YOU LINED UP WITH?' I RESPONDED, 'RWY 4L.' THEN THE CTLR ASKED, 'ACFT #2, WHAT RWY ARE YOU LINED UP ON?' ACFT #2 RESPONDED, 'RWY 4L.' AT THAT INSTANT I KNEW THAT 2 ACFT HAD TO BE VERY CLOSE, SO I LOOKED ALL AROUND AND WHEN I LOOKED STRAIGHT UP, I SAW THE GRUMMAN DIRECTLY ABOVE ME, DSNDING FOR THE RWY. HE WAS ONLY ABOUT 100 FT ABOVE ME. WHEN I SAW THIS, I CLRED TO THE R AND BROKE R. AT THE SAME TIME, THE TWR CTLR SAID 'ACFT #1, SIDESTEP R, CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 4R.' I LANDED ON RWY 4R UNEVENTFULLY. I THINK THAT CONTRIBUTING TO THE SIT WAS 3 THINGS: 1) HIGH WING ACFT UNDER A LOW WING ACFT. 2) CTLR NOT HAVING #2 ACFT IDENT TFC AHEAD. 3) CTLR'S OVEREXPECTATION THAT PLTS CAN SEE AND AVOID EVEN WITH ACFT VISIBILITY RESTRS.
