Narrative:

Lga ground issued clearance to taxi on taxiway P and hold short of runway 22. I understood clearance but failed to realize how close we were to intersection of runway 22. As we got close to runway 22, first officer asked if we were cleared to cross runway 22. I stated 'no, we were to hold short of runway 22.' I finally realized mistake when lga ground reissued clearance to hold short of runway 22. I stopped the aircraft before it was actually on the runway 22, but part of our aircraft was over the hold short line. Lga ground saw mistake and quickly cleared us to cross runway 22, which I did immediately. There was an aircraft on 2-3 mi final to runway 22, but due to quick action of lga ground, we were able to be clear on the other side of runway 22. I believe that fatigue was a factor as I had been up since XA00 doing some home projects before coming to work. One thing my first officer mentioned was that he was off the frequency to get the latest ATIS during the taxi. If he had been on ground control, perhaps he would have helped me realize how close we were getting to runway 22. Darkness was a factor. I had focused on an aircraft on taxiway P, but unfortunately it was on the other side of runway 22. At any rate, this should have never happened. I have been to lga many times at night and was familiar with airport layout. I just was not careful enough of my position.

Title: CAPT OF AN ACR MDT TURBOPROP OVERSHOT THE RWY HOLD SHORT LINE DUE TO NOT RECOGNIZING HIS LOCATION RELATIVE TO THE RWY RESULTING IN THE GND CTLR INTERVENING TO REITERATE THE HOLD SHORT PORTION OF THE TAXI CLRNC.

Narrative: LGA GND ISSUED CLRNC TO TAXI ON TXWY P AND HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22. I UNDERSTOOD CLRNC BUT FAILED TO REALIZE HOW CLOSE WE WERE TO INTXN OF RWY 22. AS WE GOT CLOSE TO RWY 22, FO ASKED IF WE WERE CLRED TO CROSS RWY 22. I STATED 'NO, WE WERE TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22.' I FINALLY REALIZED MISTAKE WHEN LGA GND REISSUED CLRNC TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22. I STOPPED THE ACFT BEFORE IT WAS ACTUALLY ON THE RWY 22, BUT PART OF OUR ACFT WAS OVER THE HOLD SHORT LINE. LGA GND SAW MISTAKE AND QUICKLY CLRED US TO CROSS RWY 22, WHICH I DID IMMEDIATELY. THERE WAS AN ACFT ON 2-3 MI FINAL TO RWY 22, BUT DUE TO QUICK ACTION OF LGA GND, WE WERE ABLE TO BE CLR ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 22. I BELIEVE THAT FATIGUE WAS A FACTOR AS I HAD BEEN UP SINCE XA00 DOING SOME HOME PROJECTS BEFORE COMING TO WORK. ONE THING MY FO MENTIONED WAS THAT HE WAS OFF THE FREQ TO GET THE LATEST ATIS DURING THE TAXI. IF HE HAD BEEN ON GND CTL, PERHAPS HE WOULD HAVE HELPED ME REALIZE HOW CLOSE WE WERE GETTING TO RWY 22. DARKNESS WAS A FACTOR. I HAD FOCUSED ON AN ACFT ON TXWY P, BUT UNFORTUNATELY IT WAS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF RWY 22. AT ANY RATE, THIS SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED. I HAVE BEEN TO LGA MANY TIMES AT NIGHT AND WAS FAMILIAR WITH ARPT LAYOUT. I JUST WAS NOT CAREFUL ENOUGH OF MY POS.
