Narrative:

Numerous mechanical problems prior to departure occupied us. We received our clearance via ACARS on pre departure clearance with kennedy 7 departure. For departure briefing we reviewed our kennedy 7 departure plate for runway 13R which said, climb to 5000 ft on assigned heading. On climb out, tower told us to turn to 185 degrees and asked if we got the heading. We said no. We then reviewed our pre departure clearance and found the 185 degree heading. Both the first officer and myself missed it. We expected a heading from tower or departure.
