Narrative:
On sep/xy/98, I found out that sectors XY2 and XY3 were possibly misidented on certain MD80 aircraft from apr/yy/98 to now, due to a change in the sector numbers. The change in the sector numbers caused confusion from r-hand to l- hand, the old sector number for l-hand was XYZ1 and r- hand was XYZ2. The new sector number for l-hand is XYZ02 and r-hand is sector XYZ3. The sector numbers were changed from odd to even on the l-hand side and from even to odd north the r-hand side. The shop was not informed of the change on apr/yy/98. The engineering change was unclr on identing l-hand from r-hand. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the change to the manual caused some confusion as everyone is used to the numbering system used over the yrs as odd on the left and even on the right. The reporter said no prior information was given to the people who use this system in writing up work cards. The reporter stated being employed as a mechanic for 10 yrs.

THE SHOP WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE CHANGE ON APR/YY/98. THE ENGINEERING CHANGE WAS UNCLR ON IDENTING L-HAND FROM R-HAND. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE CHANGE TO THE MANUAL CAUSED SOME CONFUSION AS EVERYONE IS USED TO THE NUMBERING SYS USED OVER THE YRS AS ODD ON THE L AND EVEN ON THE R. THE RPTR SAID NO PRIOR INFO WAS GIVEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO USE THIS SYS IN WRITING UP WORK CARDS. THE RPTR STATED BEING EMPLOYED AS A MECH FOR 10 YRS.
