Narrative:
Radar services were terminated during a visual approach on an IFR flight plan from seg to hef. I spoke with hef tower, who told me to report 1 mi right base runway 16R. I then requested right base runway 16L. Tower said that that request was a problem because other people were backed up in the pattern, but cleared me anyway #2 to land runway 16L. She then stated that an MU2 was on approach for runway 16L. I acknowledged but did not see the MU2. I proceeded, then tower said turn left. At that time, the MU2 was getting close, but was to my left. Had I initiated the turn, it would have placed me directly in its path. I believe that tower mistook me for someone else in the pattern. I then stated that I was climbing. I proceeded to climb toward right downwind runway 34R, when tower then instructed to turn 180 degrees, made a remark that I was in conflict with someone on downwind runway 16L and said something like, 'oh, that's you.' she had other people in the pattern as well who were encountering other types of problems and said that no one was listening to her instructions and that everyone should listen to her instructions. As soon as tower told me that there were problems, I should have clued in to take runway 16R, the shorter runway. I felt that I had to deviate from tower's instructions because as I started following her instructions to turn left while on left base, I felt that I would have had an incident with the MU2 inbound.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A C182 RPTR ON DOWNWIND LEG WAS ISSUED #2 TO LAND FOLLOWING AN MU2. THE C182 TURNED BASE LEG EARLY AHEAD OF THE MU2 AND WAS GIVEN A L TURN BY THE CTLR. THE RPTR STATED THAT THE L WOULD CAUSE A CONFLICT WITH THE MU2 AND CONTINUED STRAIGHT AHEAD TOWARDS THE DOWNWIND ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ARPT.
Narrative: RADAR SVCS WERE TERMINATED DURING A VISUAL APCH ON AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM SEG TO HEF. I SPOKE WITH HEF TWR, WHO TOLD ME TO RPT 1 MI R BASE RWY 16R. I THEN REQUESTED R BASE RWY 16L. TWR SAID THAT THAT REQUEST WAS A PROB BECAUSE OTHER PEOPLE WERE BACKED UP IN THE PATTERN, BUT CLRED ME ANYWAY #2 TO LAND RWY 16L. SHE THEN STATED THAT AN MU2 WAS ON APCH FOR RWY 16L. I ACKNOWLEDGED BUT DID NOT SEE THE MU2. I PROCEEDED, THEN TWR SAID TURN L. AT THAT TIME, THE MU2 WAS GETTING CLOSE, BUT WAS TO MY L. HAD I INITIATED THE TURN, IT WOULD HAVE PLACED ME DIRECTLY IN ITS PATH. I BELIEVE THAT TWR MISTOOK ME FOR SOMEONE ELSE IN THE PATTERN. I THEN STATED THAT I WAS CLBING. I PROCEEDED TO CLB TOWARD R DOWNWIND RWY 34R, WHEN TWR THEN INSTRUCTED TO TURN 180 DEGS, MADE A REMARK THAT I WAS IN CONFLICT WITH SOMEONE ON DOWNWIND RWY 16L AND SAID SOMETHING LIKE, 'OH, THAT'S YOU.' SHE HAD OTHER PEOPLE IN THE PATTERN AS WELL WHO WERE ENCOUNTERING OTHER TYPES OF PROBS AND SAID THAT NO ONE WAS LISTENING TO HER INSTRUCTIONS AND THAT EVERYONE SHOULD LISTEN TO HER INSTRUCTIONS. AS SOON AS TWR TOLD ME THAT THERE WERE PROBS, I SHOULD HAVE CLUED IN TO TAKE RWY 16R, THE SHORTER RWY. I FELT THAT I HAD TO DEVIATE FROM TWR'S INSTRUCTIONS BECAUSE AS I STARTED FOLLOWING HER INSTRUCTIONS TO TURN L WHILE ON L BASE, I FELT THAT I WOULD HAVE HAD AN INCIDENT WITH THE MU2 INBOUND.
