Narrative:

Downwind vector ord runway 4R. Deviated 300 ft below assigned 4000 ft during vectors. We got a warning from the altitude alert about the same time the controller asked us to maintain 4000 ft. At the time, I was flying and attempting to brief the approach. We all missed the trend. Classic heads down. We were somewhat tired for various reasons -- among them a 3 hour situation at a station that has a crew room, which is cramped as well as noisy. Still, we all know better, and I consider it my fault.
