Narrative:

I encountered moderate to severe turbulence approximately 30 mi from my destination. The aircraft stall warning would go off in level cruise due to updrafts and downdrafts. I became disoriented and ended up approximately 20 mi south of my destination (mt sterling, ky). I had calculated my fuel to have 30 mins reserve, but due to turbulence and windshear I drifted south of my course and ran low on fuel. The engine misfired 2 or 3 times, so I made a precautionary landing on the mountain parkway before I ran completely out of fuel. The landing was normal with no traffic in sight either way. There was no damage or injuries of any kind. My suggestion as to how to prevent a recurrence is to calculate more than a 30 min reserve to allow for abnormal conditions and to use flight following when available.

Title: SMA PLT GOT LOST, THEN RAN OUT OF GAS. PLT LANDED ON HWY.

Narrative: I ENCOUNTERED MODERATE TO SEVERE TURB APPROX 30 MI FROM MY DEST. THE ACFT STALL WARNING WOULD GO OFF IN LEVEL CRUISE DUE TO UPDRAFTS AND DOWNDRAFTS. I BECAME DISORIENTED AND ENDED UP APPROX 20 MI S OF MY DEST (MT STERLING, KY). I HAD CALCULATED MY FUEL TO HAVE 30 MINS RESERVE, BUT DUE TO TURB AND WINDSHEAR I DRIFTED S OF MY COURSE AND RAN LOW ON FUEL. THE ENG MISFIRED 2 OR 3 TIMES, SO I MADE A PRECAUTIONARY LNDG ON THE MOUNTAIN PARKWAY BEFORE I RAN COMPLETELY OUT OF FUEL. THE LNDG WAS NORMAL WITH NO TFC IN SIGHT EITHER WAY. THERE WAS NO DAMAGE OR INJURIES OF ANY KIND. MY SUGGESTION AS TO HOW TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE IS TO CALCULATE MORE THAN A 30 MIN RESERVE TO ALLOW FOR ABNORMAL CONDITIONS AND TO USE FLT FOLLOWING WHEN AVAILABLE.
