Narrative:
New york approach cleared us down to 3000 ft, told us to fly 100 degrees to enter visual approach to runway 1 at teb, which is a depicted visual approach procedure. This approach procedure is very difficult to understand due to unfamiliar landmarks such as 'willowbrook mall' and 'garden state parkway.' at 24 DME from jfk 318 degree radial, I started a descent to 2000 ft, which is the recommended altitude after passing the willowbrook mall, which is at 26.7 DME from jfk 318 degree radial. At 2700 ft MSL, controller stated that I was descending and that I wasn't cleared for anything. He then reclred me for the visual approach to runway 1 at teb and stated that I had to cross garden state parkway at 1500 ft MSL, which initially was very difficult to find from the air, because I did not have a new jersey road map in front of me. The controller stated 'I know this is a difficult approach, but you are still required to comply,' which I believe I did. In my opinion, this is a very poor approach which has poor identify landmarks if you are not totally familiar with the local area. In addition, I believe I was getting false information from jfk VOR on the 318 degree radial due to interference from the tall buildings at downtown new york city. #2 HSI was showing on 318 degree radial, while #1 HSI was showing 1 DOT out to the left of jfk 318 degree radial. This information, along with the unclr instructions from the new york approach controller, made this visual approach very confusing.

Title: A CL600 CHALLENGER CREW FACES DIFFICULTY IN MAKING THE TEB RWY 1 VISUAL APCH. PIC LEAVES 3000 FT TOO EARLY WHEN HE BELIEVES HE IS FOLLOWING THE DICTATES OF THE APCH.
Narrative: NEW YORK APCH CLRED US DOWN TO 3000 FT, TOLD US TO FLY 100 DEGS TO ENTER VISUAL APCH TO RWY 1 AT TEB, WHICH IS A DEPICTED VISUAL APCH PROC. THIS APCH PROC IS VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND DUE TO UNFAMILIAR LANDMARKS SUCH AS 'WILLOWBROOK MALL' AND 'GARDEN STATE PARKWAY.' AT 24 DME FROM JFK 318 DEG RADIAL, I STARTED A DSCNT TO 2000 FT, WHICH IS THE RECOMMENDED ALT AFTER PASSING THE WILLOWBROOK MALL, WHICH IS AT 26.7 DME FROM JFK 318 DEG RADIAL. AT 2700 FT MSL, CTLR STATED THAT I WAS DSNDING AND THAT I WASN'T CLRED FOR ANYTHING. HE THEN RECLRED ME FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 1 AT TEB AND STATED THAT I HAD TO CROSS GARDEN STATE PARKWAY AT 1500 FT MSL, WHICH INITIALLY WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND FROM THE AIR, BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE A NEW JERSEY ROAD MAP IN FRONT OF ME. THE CTLR STATED 'I KNOW THIS IS A DIFFICULT APCH, BUT YOU ARE STILL REQUIRED TO COMPLY,' WHICH I BELIEVE I DID. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS A VERY POOR APCH WHICH HAS POOR IDENT LANDMARKS IF YOU ARE NOT TOTALLY FAMILIAR WITH THE LCL AREA. IN ADDITION, I BELIEVE I WAS GETTING FALSE INFO FROM JFK VOR ON THE 318 DEG RADIAL DUE TO INTERFERENCE FROM THE TALL BUILDINGS AT DOWNTOWN NEW YORK CITY. #2 HSI WAS SHOWING ON 318 DEG RADIAL, WHILE #1 HSI WAS SHOWING 1 DOT OUT TO THE L OF JFK 318 DEG RADIAL. THIS INFO, ALONG WITH THE UNCLR INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE NEW YORK APCH CTLR, MADE THIS VISUAL APCH VERY CONFUSING.
