Narrative:
While in holding, first officer flying exceeded holding pattern on inbound leg. Overflew fix by 5 mi before turn outbound. Fuel onboard would not allow aircraft to hold to end of estimated approach time. Captain in process of checking WX at alternate/communication with dispatch, estimated time to alternate/fuel onboard, talking to passenger. First glance by captain didn't realize pattern had been exceeded. First officer worried about fuel onboard and diverting distraction from holding position. Returned to pattern. No other problems with pattern. Caused by crew overload and new first officer not paying attention to flying, and captain not watching first officer closer -- especially knowing that first officer was new to position.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FO OF A DC9 EXCEEDED THE HOLDING PATTERN LIMITS DUE TO DISTR OF FUEL AVAILABLE STATUS AND NEED TO DEPART HOLDING ASAP SINCE THE FUEL AVAILABLE WOULD NOT ALLOW HOLDING TO THE ESTIMATE APCH TIME. THE MISTAKE WAS CAUGHT AFTER 5 MI AND THE ACFT RETURNED TO THE HOLDING FIX.
Narrative: WHILE IN HOLDING, FO FLYING EXCEEDED HOLDING PATTERN ON INBOUND LEG. OVERFLEW FIX BY 5 MI BEFORE TURN OUTBOUND. FUEL ONBOARD WOULD NOT ALLOW ACFT TO HOLD TO END OF ESTIMATED APCH TIME. CAPT IN PROCESS OF CHKING WX AT ALTERNATE/COM WITH DISPATCH, ESTIMATED TIME TO ALTERNATE/FUEL ONBOARD, TALKING TO PAX. FIRST GLANCE BY CAPT DIDN'T REALIZE PATTERN HAD BEEN EXCEEDED. FO WORRIED ABOUT FUEL ONBOARD AND DIVERTING DISTR FROM HOLDING POS. RETURNED TO PATTERN. NO OTHER PROBS WITH PATTERN. CAUSED BY CREW OVERLOAD AND NEW FO NOT PAYING ATTN TO FLYING, AND CAPT NOT WATCHING FO CLOSER -- ESPECIALLY KNOWING THAT FO WAS NEW TO POS.
