Narrative:
We (copilot and I) forgot to set 29.92 when passing FL180. We leveled at 17000 ft for a few mins. The flight attendant called and wanted to know if she could start serving and I said we should be climbing in a min, but could you bring us something to drink. While she was in the cockpit or before she came up, we were given a climb to FL220 and started the climb. We reached FL220 and stayed with the control for at least 5-7 mins. When switched to ZID is when I realized we did not reset our altimeter. We set 29.92. As we checked in with ZID, we put 29.92 into the altimeter window for ZID to show FL220. We just dropped the ball. Most pilots I know get 29.92 when passing 17000 ft. If you do it before 17000 ft and have to level off say below 17000 ft, you run the same risk of being at the wrong altitude or ask for the new altimeter setting.

Title: DHC8 CREW CLBED INITIALLY TO 17000 FT. WHILE WAITING FOR HIGHER ALT, CREW WAS DISTR BY FLT ATTENDANT ABOUT THE TIME ARTCC ISSUED A CLRNC TO FL220. WHEN FLT WAS HANDED OFF TO NEXT CTR, CREW NOTICED THAT THEY HAD FORGOT TO SET IN STANDARD ALTIMETER.
Narrative: WE (COPLT AND I) FORGOT TO SET 29.92 WHEN PASSING FL180. WE LEVELED AT 17000 FT FOR A FEW MINS. THE FLT ATTENDANT CALLED AND WANTED TO KNOW IF SHE COULD START SERVING AND I SAID WE SHOULD BE CLBING IN A MIN, BUT COULD YOU BRING US SOMETHING TO DRINK. WHILE SHE WAS IN THE COCKPIT OR BEFORE SHE CAME UP, WE WERE GIVEN A CLB TO FL220 AND STARTED THE CLB. WE REACHED FL220 AND STAYED WITH THE CTL FOR AT LEAST 5-7 MINS. WHEN SWITCHED TO ZID IS WHEN I REALIZED WE DID NOT RESET OUR ALTIMETER. WE SET 29.92. AS WE CHKED IN WITH ZID, WE PUT 29.92 INTO THE ALTIMETER WINDOW FOR ZID TO SHOW FL220. WE JUST DROPPED THE BALL. MOST PLTS I KNOW GET 29.92 WHEN PASSING 17000 FT. IF YOU DO IT BEFORE 17000 FT AND HAVE TO LEVEL OFF SAY BELOW 17000 FT, YOU RUN THE SAME RISK OF BEING AT THE WRONG ALT OR ASK FOR THE NEW ALTIMETER SETTING.
