Narrative:
We had departed ind airport and then cleared to 6000 ft and level off due to traffic above us (1000 ft above). ATC (departure) then tells us that traffic is clear and to climb to 15000 ft. We began our climb and soon discovered that the traffic was not clear. TCASII told us to stop climbing. By this time, the traffic was visible to us. I slowed the climb and turned left to evade any closer proximity to the traffic. The traffic was flying left to right. Violent evasive maneuvers were not needed because the traffic was visible to us. The flight continued normally to our destination, stl. ATC should be aware of the speed differences between large transport aircraft and light singles.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DC9 CREW DEP IND INSTRUCTED TO LEVEL AT 6000 FT FOR TFC. CTLR THEN ADVISED CREW THAT TFC WAS CLR AND ISSUED HIGHER ALT. CREW RECEIVED TCASII WARNING BUT SAW THE TFC.
Narrative: WE HAD DEPARTED IND ARPT AND THEN CLRED TO 6000 FT AND LEVEL OFF DUE TO TFC ABOVE US (1000 FT ABOVE). ATC (DEP) THEN TELLS US THAT TFC IS CLR AND TO CLB TO 15000 FT. WE BEGAN OUR CLB AND SOON DISCOVERED THAT THE TFC WAS NOT CLR. TCASII TOLD US TO STOP CLBING. BY THIS TIME, THE TFC WAS VISIBLE TO US. I SLOWED THE CLB AND TURNED L TO EVADE ANY CLOSER PROX TO THE TFC. THE TFC WAS FLYING L TO R. VIOLENT EVASIVE MANEUVERS WERE NOT NEEDED BECAUSE THE TFC WAS VISIBLE TO US. THE FLT CONTINUED NORMALLY TO OUR DEST, STL. ATC SHOULD BE AWARE OF THE SPD DIFFERENCES BTWN LARGE TRANSPORT ACFT AND LIGHT SINGLES.
