Narrative:
While being radar vectored after departing gso, gso departure asked us if we were 'painting' the level 3 cell (thunderstorm/rain) at our 11-12 O'clock position. Our radar was not operating properly and I (the PNF) was trying to work the radar to get an accurate picture. We were cleared to 7000 ft MSL and the first officer was the PF. As we were passing through 6500 ft MSL we entered the outer fringes of the cell. We started to experience moderate turbulence and got caught in an updraft. While I was trying to determine our best course of action to exit the cell, the first officer (PF) allowed the aircraft to climb to 7400 ft before correcting back down to 7000 ft. I think the major cause was the first officer's inexperience. He was a new hire with less than 100 hours and got caught up watching me and the radar instead of flying the aircraft. I also feel that I should have been more alert to his lack of experience and not relied on the division of duties. I should have monitored him better.

Title: BA32 CREW PENETRATE A CLASS 3 TSTM. UPDRAFTS CAUSE ACFT TO GO 400 FT ABOVE CLRNC ALT.
Narrative: WHILE BEING RADAR VECTORED AFTER DEPARTING GSO, GSO DEP ASKED US IF WE WERE 'PAINTING' THE LEVEL 3 CELL (TSTM/RAIN) AT OUR 11-12 O'CLOCK POS. OUR RADAR WAS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY AND I (THE PNF) WAS TRYING TO WORK THE RADAR TO GET AN ACCURATE PICTURE. WE WERE CLRED TO 7000 FT MSL AND THE FO WAS THE PF. AS WE WERE PASSING THROUGH 6500 FT MSL WE ENTERED THE OUTER FRINGES OF THE CELL. WE STARTED TO EXPERIENCE MODERATE TURB AND GOT CAUGHT IN AN UPDRAFT. WHILE I WAS TRYING TO DETERMINE OUR BEST COURSE OF ACTION TO EXIT THE CELL, THE FO (PF) ALLOWED THE ACFT TO CLB TO 7400 FT BEFORE CORRECTING BACK DOWN TO 7000 FT. I THINK THE MAJOR CAUSE WAS THE FO'S INEXPERIENCE. HE WAS A NEW HIRE WITH LESS THAN 100 HRS AND GOT CAUGHT UP WATCHING ME AND THE RADAR INSTEAD OF FLYING THE ACFT. I ALSO FEEL THAT I SHOULD HAVE BEEN MORE ALERT TO HIS LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND NOT RELIED ON THE DIVISION OF DUTIES. I SHOULD HAVE MONITORED HIM BETTER.
