Engine had massive internal failure with complete stoppage. Off airport landing executed without damage to persons or aircraft. Engine failure occurred during private pilot check ride. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the aircraft was a champion 7ECA and the engine failure was caused by a broken bolt on a connecting rod cap. The reporter said the engine incurred major damage.

Title: A CHAMPION 7ECA IN CRUISE AT 2500 FT HAD AN ENG FAILURE AND LANDED OFF ARPT CAUSED BY A BROKEN CONNECTING ROD CAP BOLT.

Narrative: ENG HAD MASSIVE INTERNAL FAILURE WITH COMPLETE STOPPAGE. OFF ARPT LNDG EXECUTED WITHOUT DAMAGE TO PERSONS OR ACFT. ENG FAILURE OCCURRED DURING PVT PLT CHK RIDE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THE ACFT WAS A CHAMPION 7ECA AND THE ENG FAILURE WAS CAUSED BY A BROKEN BOLT ON A CONNECTING ROD CAP. THE RPTR SAID THE ENG INCURRED MAJOR DAMAGE.
